WILLIAM ALLEN WHITE
Five students qualify for a trip to Emporia, Kansas to attend the William Allen White Children's Book Awards 52nd Annual Celebration on October 2, 2004.  In order to qualify, 3rd to 5th grade students had to read 14 or 15 books, depending on their grade level and pass the book tests with an 80% or higher accuracy by the end of March last spring.

15 students read at least 7 W.A.W. books and were rewarded with Cynthia's Pizza in Syracuse, KS.  34 students read at least four W.A.W. books and were eligible to cast a vote for their favoite W.A.W. book. Greeley County third to eighth grade students read over 214 W.A.W. books last year.  Way to go!

MAGAZINE CHECK OUT

Magazines may be checked out for two days this year.  They will be scanned just like books are.  If no one is in the library, students are encouraged to write their name and bar code number down in the black notebook.  Additional magazines have been ordered and will be available in January.

Book Checkout Policy

This year kindergarten and first grade students are allowed to check out three books each week.  Books are checked out for a one week.  If the student is not finished with the book they may re-check it as long as they bring the book back to do so.

Second grade through sixth grade may have a total of four books checked out in one week.  Again, books are checked out for one week, and if the student is not finished with the book they may re-check it as long as they bring the book back to the library to recheck it.

The library received numerous new books to add to our collection this year, please encourage your child to take good care of the books that they check out.  It is important that our books be taken care of properly so they can be read many times over.  At the beginning of the year book care was stressed in each class.

Occassionally, a book is severly damaged or lost.  When this happens the students know they are responsible for paying the replacement cost of the book.  In order to maintain the collection that we have, students realize they have a responsibility to take care of the books they check out.
